The Artist

Josh Cihak

A landscape photographer based in Mesa, Arizona, working across the deserts, canyons, and high country of the American Southwest and far beyond.

The short version

I came to photography the way a lot of people do, as an excuse to be outside. Somewhere along the way the excuse became the point, and the camera became the reason to be standing on a ridge in the dark, waiting for a sky to do something.

I work slowly and travel light. I’m far less interested in the dramatic, postcard version of a place than in its quiet hour, the few minutes when the wind drops, the light turns, and the landscape seems to hold its breath.

When that happens, I make a single, careful frame. Then I bring it home and spend as long as it takes to turn it into a print worth keeping, because a photograph that lives in a drawer isn’t really finished.

How I work

Three things I believe

01

Patience

The best light is rarely the first light. Most of these images are the reward for returning to a place again and again until it finally opens up.

02

Place

Every photograph is made somewhere real and specific. I want you to feel the air of it, the cold, the quiet, the hour of the day.

03

Permanence

A photograph is only half-finished on the camera. The other half is the print: archival, considered, and built to outlast all of us.
